Can CBD help treat Asthma? – FactsAboutCBD

About 1 in 12 people in the UK have been diagnosed with asthma. Asthma is mostly associated with children, and while they are more susceptible to having asthma, it’s not unusual to develop it as an adult either. Asthma causes contraction of the bronchi – the airways that split off from the trachea – making it difficult to breathe.

A number of effective remedies already exist for asthma, but considering just how different our bodies are, they aren’t always effective. There’s a need for something that can drastically improve a person’s quality of life, considering it’s a condition people may have to live with pretty much their whole lives. CBD oil is such a remedy.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a condition where the airways narrow, swell and produce more mucus than usual, making breathing difficult and triggering coughs in some people, shortness of breath and wheezing. Asthma can’t be cured, but the symptoms can be managed so that it barely interferes with a person’s day-to-day activities. It does, however, vary in intensity from person to person – it could be life-threatening in some people and a minor nuisance for others

Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, and trouble sleeping due to short breath. If left untreated, these could progress to more severe stages where attacks are more frequent and bothersome, and may interferes with activities such as exercise or lead to low productivity at work.

It’s usually difficult to predict in most people, but can be triggered by exercise, pollutants and irritants, and allergies.

The key to making asthma manageable is long-term control and prevention of attacks before they happen. After learning one’s triggers and how to avoid them, a person is issued with a quick-relief inhaler that contains albuterol, an adrenergic (it mimics adrenaline). However, these tend to cause anxiety in some patients.

Other oral medications such as montelukast and zafirlukast may cause hallucinations and aggression in some people, despite being incredibly effective.

CBD and asthma have found themselves the subject of numerous discussions because of CBD’s amazing anti-inflammatory properties.

How effective is CBD against asthma?

CBD can be classified as a bronchodilator – a class of drugs that, when used, used to relaxation of the bronchi, making it easy to breathe. It’s effectiveness when dealing with asthma should thus be immediately apparent.

At the same time, the inability to breathe also triggers the production of hormones like cortisol (the stress hormone). This, in turn, leads to a lot of asthma patients developing anxiety, and, often, it develops into depression.

One of the drugs asthma patients may find themselves dependent on is fluticasone or budesonide – both anti-inflammatory. CBD oil has a similar effect to these drugs. The only difference is that they take a few days to weeks to be fully effective, while CBD just needs minutes if it has been used correctly.

Speaking of using CBD for asthma correctly…

How to use CBD for asthma

The popularity of CBD has greatly been aided by the fact that there are tons of different ways in which it can be used.

Some people argue against vaping CBD oil if you’re asthmatic because the strong smell might trigger an attack. There’s some truth to this, since pure CBD smells and tastes acrid. However, mildly-flavored CBD vapes are perfectly fine for use when combating asthma symptoms.

Another great alternative is to use a CBD tincture. These are usually not flavored but incredibly concentrated. The taste might not be suited for everyone’s tongue, but in the absence of mild-odor vapes, you may have no choice.

Lastly, make sure the CBD product you are buying has little to no THC in it. THC is known to alleviate anxiety in some people and since it’s psychoactive, may make you unaware of your surroundings and symptoms. Hemp oil is a little different from CBD, but are usually used together in order to give a stronger hit and provide the nutritional aspect.
