‘It’s a passion,’ she told DailyMailTV’s Senior Correspondent Alicia Quarles. ‘And what’s interesting about passion is you don’t choose it, it chooses you.’

Suzanne’s passion was born out of what could have been a potential tragedy when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001.

‘Those three words: ‘you have cancer’ rock your world because all of a sudden you’re faced with your own mortality,’ Somers said. ‘So, it forced me, early on, to take charge of my health ’cause I didn’t want to do it their way.’

She made the controversial decision to eschew traditional medical protocol and refused chemotherapy. However, she did get lumpectomy and undergo radiation.

Suzanne’s opinions on topics like hormone replacement therapy, toxins and alternative cancer treatments have caught her a fair amount of backlash and criticism over the years.

Still, she’s pushed forward with her battle to age gracefully and healthfully, penning over 20 books over the years. Her latest, A New Way To Age, tackles the biggest buzzword in wellness today: inflammation.

‘Cholesterol is not the issue,’ Suzanne said when discussing heart health. ‘It’s inflammation.’

Suzanne’s book includes several natural ways to fight inflammation in the body but that doesn’t mean she poo-poos traditional Western medicine all together.

'First go natural and try,' she explained. 'You know what do you have to lose? And when you need drugs they're a godsend and you can always go to them.'

'There's a stat I came across that I couldn't believe,' Suzanne dished. 'Butter has almost the exact same percentages of saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat and mono on saturated fat as breast milk, which means nature wanted us to be on a high fat diet.'

Somers’ healthy habits begin with food, only putting the whole, real ingredients into her body and avoiding troublesome ‘low-fat’ products.

‘Food is our fuel,’ she said. ‘If you are a Maserati, you would only put the highest quality octane into that Maserati. You would dream of putting inferior fuel into your Maserati.’

Continuing on with the luxury car analogy, Suzanne explained that the human body is much more complex than a car making it more important to fuel it with the best foods a person can afford and for her that means whole foods high in fat, protein and plants.

‘If you can pick it, pluck it, milk it or shoot it and it’s organic, eat it,’ she said matter-of-factly.’

‘Every cell in the human body has a cannabis receptor, which means our bodies have been craving it. Probably for healing and for managing stress,’ Suzanne told DailyMailTV.

'The reason I talk about sex is because at 73 everybody thinks it's over, and I just want women and men to know it ain't over,' She said (Pictured with husband Alan)

Another great way to manage stress is with touch and Somers makes no bones about how much sex she has with her husband of over 40 years, Alan.

‘The reason I talk about sex is because at 73 everybody thinks it’s over, and I just want women and men to know it ain’t over,’ She said. ‘Because I’ve put all of my hormones back, which I explain in this book, to optimal levels, my body’s operating like a young woman in that sense.’

Adding: ‘I’m just trying to explain what I know now at 73. Right now we’ve got a longer life but no quality and what I write about is let’s live the long life but have quality.’
